Heterochromia – The Eyes Have It

There are a number of reasons why animals can have one eye of one color and the second of another, but the term for the most likely cause is heterochromia.  It is more often than not to do with melanin. This is a pigment that is found almost everywhere in nature (spiders being a notable exception) and it dictates such things are skin and eye color.

Heterochromia occurs when there is either an excess or a lack of melanin.  Although eye color can be affected by disease or injury when they are different colors the odds are that it is heterochromia which is the cause.  The color of the iris in particular is determined first and foremost by the concentration f melanin and in most cases the eye is hyperpigmented – there is too much melanin.

Complete heterochromia is seen often in animals such as cats and dogs.  It almost always involves the affected eye appearing blue in color.  It happens in a white spot where melanin is absent – the cat species which seem to be affected are the Turkish Van and Angora.  The odd-eyed cats tend to be white or mostly white and with one normal eye and one blue eye – altogether very striking.

Among dogs the husky is often seen to have heterochromia and also the Australian Shepherd and the Catahoula Leopard dog.  Horses too can have heterochromia, mostly common in horses with pinto coloring.  The condition has also been recorded in cattle – and even water buffalo!  Ferrets too have been known to have heterochromia.

O Clube Português de Felinicultura:

O Clube Português de Felinicultura, fundado em 1985 é o fundador e detentor do "livro de origens português" e tem como objectivo principal, e de acordo com os seus estatutos, a protecção das raças felinas, principalmente as diferentes raças de gatos.

Ao associar-se  à  FIFe  -  Federação Internacional Felina,  o  C.P.F. garantiu  o reconhecimento a nível internacional, o que lhe possibilita uma permuta de contactos bastante salutar, não só pelo convívio que proporciona mas também, e principalmente, pela troca de experiências e enriquecimento de conhecimentos.

Tem por objectivo orientar e estabelecer regras para o melhoramento da criação de "gatos" fomentando o apuramento das diversas raças, divulgando-as no seu todo,  quer morfológico, quer temperamental.
 
O C.P.F.  organiza exposições de norte a sul de Portugal divulgando desta forma o interesse pela "felinicultura" e dando a conhecer novas raças ao público em geral.
A forte participação de expositores pertencentes a Clubes de outros países tem permitido a introdução no nosso país e a divulgação ao público em geral de raças ainda não existentes nem divulgadas em Portugal.
 
Sendo, é certo, um Clube ainda jovem, o Clube Português de Felinicultura mereceu há muito a confiança da Federação Internacional Felina.
 
Foi assim, com a organização da Assembleia Geral da FIFe em 1991, como também o foi com a 6ª Exposição Felina Mundial que teve lugar, na cidade de Lisboa, em Abril de 1995.
 
Apesar de toda a juventude deste Clube, o seu sucesso dependerá da adesão ao movimento associativo que se espera continue, por parte de todos, a ser cada vez mais dinâmico e activo.
 
Todos os sócios, amigos e simpatizantes deste Clube  que,  por qualquer forma,  gostam dos "gatos", terão de ser cada vez mais actuantes, pois só assim, poderão  ajudar a "felinicultura" em Portugal.
